Speed vs Velocity

Multiple Choice
A truck is making a long road trip from Idaho to Texas. During one long portion, the trucker is able to go 210 miles in 3 hours. The speed of the truck is...
70 mi/hr
0.14 mi/hr
21 mi/hr
3 hrs

Multiple Choice
A truck is making a long road trip from Idaho to Texas. During one long portion, the trucker is able to go 210 miles in 3 hours. What do we know about the speed and velocity of the truck?
Nothing, we can't solve for either.
We can find velocity, but not speed.
We can find speed, but not velocity since we don't know the truck's displacement.
Speed and velocity are equal because distance and displacement are the same in those 3 hours.

Multiple Choice
Let's say the child rides this route (from green to red) in 5 seconds. The child's speed would be...
2 m/s
0.8 m/s
3 m/s
1 m/s

Multiple Choice
Let's say the child rides this route (from green to red) in 5 seconds. The child's velocity would be...
2 m/s
0.8 m/s
3 m/s
1 m/s

Average vs Instantaneous
Both terms can apply to speed and/or velocity...
Instantaneous (speed or velocity) is the rate of the object in a specific moment. For example... "what is the speed at 3.5 s into the trip?"
Average (speed or velocity) is the rate of an object over a span of time. For example... "what is the velocity of the object from 2 - 5 seconds?"
SOMETIMES the two are the same value.
ANYTIME you use the s = d/t or v = x/t equations you get an average over the time span entered for "t."

Multiple Choice
What does the speedometer in a car show the driver?
Instantaneous speed
Instantaneous velocity
Average speed
Average velocity
14
Multiple Choice
A student walks the 1.2 miles from school to their house in 0.25 hours (15 min). Since s = d/t we know s = 4.8 mi/hr. What is this "4.8 mi/hr?"
Instantaneous speed
average speed
instantaneous velocity
average velocity

Multiple Choice
Using data... Note how much time it took this object to get from 2m to 6m. What is the object's velocity in this time?
2 m/s
6 m/s
4 m/s
Not enough info
16
Multiple Choice
Using data... Note where the object starts at t = 0 and where it ends at t = 6 s. What is the object's ave velocity in this time?
3 m/s
0.33 m/s
0 m/s
Not enough info
