it is important to get the dative right, because you don't want to give your sister to the candles, or give the children to the silverware.

Pronomen /pronouns
Pronouns can also be dative and accusative.
When ich is accusative it becomes mich.
For example. Ich rufe dich später an. (I will call you later.) who are you calling? me. Not to me or for me. It is accusative.
When du is accusative, it becomes dich.
For example: Ich sehe dich immer in Deutschklasse. (I always see you in German class.) Who/ what do I see? You. Not to you or for you. It is accusative.

Accusative prepositions are : DOGFU (durch, ohne, gegen für, um)
Example: für meinen Bruder, ohne dich, um ihn)

Dative prepositions are
Aus, außer, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber
Example: except for the meat/außer dem Fleisch, with you -mit dir, across from the school, gegenüber der Schule
