Relative words

Relative words are :

who/that= refers to one or many -used for peo​ple:

He is the boy who lives in the second floor

​which/that=refers to a noun

​This is the book which I talked to you about.

​whose=refers to what belongs to whom

​This is the boy whose father is a doctor.

​

​Relative adverbs

​Relative adverbs are:

​where=in/at which=generally it refers to a place

​ This is the hotel where/in-at which I spent my holidays at last summer (the hotel as a place to stay)

​

NOTE!!! This is the hotel which I visited last summer.

( which refers to the hotel as a general noun)

​

​

​Relative adverbs

when= it refers to time and date.

​I remember the day when we first met.

​

NOTE!!! I will call you when I get home. -Time clause=Χρονική πρόταση

​

​(the reason) why= refers to a specific reason​

​

​This is the reason why I wanted to study Art.

​Types of Relative Clauses

​-Defining relative sentences= the refer to something necessary for the meaning of the whole sentence and they can't be omitted.

-In a defining relative sentence you can replace who and which with that. example:

This is the boy who/that lives next door.

​

​ This is the place which/that we visited last year.

​Defining relative sentences

​ This is the reason why/that I left the party early=

​ This is the reason I left the party early.

​

​I remember the day when/that we first met=

​Non-defining relative sentenses

​ John , who is my second cousin, is an excellent doctor.

​ The clause:, who is my second cousin,

-can be ommitted -μπορεί να παραλειφθεί γιατί προσθέτει μόνο πληροφορίες και γιατί χωρίς αυτήν το νόημα
