Day 1

Continued on next slide.

Since ancient times, pirates have sailed the seas and harassed ships of most nations. The period of time between the 1500s and 1700s was the great age of piracy. Present day rovers still attack ships in various parts of the world. Even today, pirates can be tried in all countries because robbery on the high seas or attacks on land is against the law of all nations. Many movies and stories of today have romanticized rovers by portraying them as swashbuckling cavaliers in high boots,

elegant clothes, gold jewelry, and large hats. Most real-life pirates were drunken men who dressed in worn clothes and wasted their illegally-gained money.

A few pirates actually became patriotic heroes. One of these men was Buccaneer Jean Laffite (lah FEET). A Frenchman, Laffite became a New Orleans smuggler and pirate. In 1810, he made himself chief of a group

In 1814, while the British were at war with the United States, they offered Lafitte a pardon for his crimes, $30,000, and a captaincy in the British Navy if he helped them attack the Americans at New Orleans. He refused, informed the United States of the British plans, and turned around and offered his services as a defender of the United States. He fought for General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815.
