​Countable and Uncountable Nouns

​Things, people, places, and ideas that we can clearly and easily count, are countable nouns.

Examples: 2 pencils, 5 cars, 100 people, 15 trees.

​Things, people, places, and ideas that are impossible, or impractical to count, are considered uncountable nouns.

Examples: rice, water, juice.

​Countable Noun Singular Articles

​a + noun that start with a consonant sound.

​a car, a bear, a doll, a tree, a snowman, a university (y-sound), a one-in-lifetime experience (w-sound), a historic day (not silent h)

an + noun that starts with a vowel sound.

​an apple, an end, an idea, an object, an urn, an honour (silent h)

​

​the + noun to talk about a specific noun

​the car, the apple, the end, the doll, the Sun

Use some for countable and uncountable nouns​, when the quantity is limited but not specified.

​

​There are some apples in the fridge. (countable)

​There is some juice on the table. (uncountable)
