2

Make sure to pick up a Solving Equations Review paper!

There are several videos incorporated in this lesson, so you may listen to them through headphones, quietly from your computer, or you can turn on the captions and watch that way. Just make sure to watch and follow along. :)

3

These are the basic steps to solving an equation.

Copy them down onto your paper!

Then, you'll watch and try some examples. It'll start off with easier examples and increase in difficulty.

4

Remember: You can always check your own answer!

Just substitute the number you get in for the variable in the original equation and make sure that it makes the equation true!

5

Two-step equations

Work out #1-4 on your paper. You will check your answers on the next slide. 2-step equations should be a review!

6

Fill in the Blank

Work out #1 18+a5=2-18+\frac{a}{5}=2  on your paper and enter your answer below.

JUST type the number that you get (not a = in front)!

7

Fill in the Blank

Work out #2 14x3=6\frac{1}{4}x-3=-6  on your paper and enter your answer below.

JUST type the number that you get (not x = in front)!

8

Fill in the Blank

Work out #3 x+34=12\frac{x+3}{4}=12  on your paper and enter your answer below.

JUST type the number that you get (not x = in front)!

9

Fill in the Blank

Work out #4 1.3+0.5x=3.411.3+0.5x=-3.41  on your paper and enter your answer below.

JUST type the number that you get (not x = in front)!

10

Multi-step equations (variables one side)

Remember to follow the steps at the top of the page!

11

#5

Watch and copy on your paper for #5!

12

Fill in the Blank

Now, work out #6 4(3y1)5y=114\left(3y-1\right)-5y=-11  on your paper and enter your answer below.

JUST type the number that you get (not y = in front)!

13

If you missed #6, stop and watch it worked out!

If not, you can just skip this slide.

14

Fill in the Blank

Now, work out #7 3(x+2)+5=103\left(x+2\right)+5=10  on your paper and enter your answer below.

JUST type the number that you get (not x = in front)!

Leave your answer as a fraction (use the / button and no spaces)!

15

If you missed #7, stop and watch it worked out!

If not, you can just skip this slide.

16

Multi-step equations (variables both sides)

Remember to follow the steps at the top of the page!

17

#8

Watch and copy on your paper for #8!

18

Fill in the Blank

Now, work out #9 6(a+12)a=2(a+6)6\left(a+12\right)-a=-2\left(a+6\right)  on your paper and enter your answer below.

JUST type the number that you get (not a = in front)!

19

If you missed #9, stop and watch it worked out!

If not, you can just skip this slide.

20

Fill in the Blank

Now, work out #10 5+7v=6(6v+4)-5+7v=6\left(6v+4\right)  on your paper and enter your answer below.

JUST type the number that you get (not v = in front)!

21

If you missed #10, stop and watch it worked out!

If not, you can just skip this slide.

22

Special Solutions

Most of our equations have just one solution (like all of the ones we've done so far), but they can sometimes have no solution or infinitely many solutions.

23

#11

Watch and copy on your paper for #11!

24

#12

Watch and copy on your paper for #12!

25

Multiple Choice

What is the solution to this equation?
1
one solution
2
no solution
3
infinite solutions

26

Multiple Choice

What is the solution to the equations?
1
one solution
2
no solution
3
infinite solutions

27

Literal Equations

Use inverse operations to isolate the variable! Ask yourself what steps you would take to solve if the equation had numbers instead of variables.

28

#13

Watch and copy on your paper for #13!

29

#14

Watch and copy on your paper for #14!

30

Multiple Choice

Work out #15

Solve: V = πr²h , for h

1
V/(πr²) = h
2
V - πr² = h
3
V + πr² = h
4
V/π = h

31

If you missed #15, stop and watch it worked out!

If not, you can just skip this slide.

32

Multiple Choice

Solve #16:

The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is  P=2l+2wP=2l+2w .  Solve for w.

1

w=2lP2w=\frac{2l-P}{2}

2

w=lP2w=\frac{l-P}{2}

3

w=P2l2w=\frac{P-2l}{2}

4

w=P2lw=P-2l

33

If you missed #16, stop and watch it worked out!

If not, you can just skip this slide.

34

Complete the other problems, put a star by ones you want me to go over Monday, and turn it in to the basket.

Make sure to finish your 1.1 ALEKS Homework from yesterday!
