How do pets get worms?

Fleas, mice or other rodents, ingesting larvae or eggs, eating meat infested with worms, or from mothers

  • Flea bites don't cause worms, but ingesting fleas can; fleas eat tapeworm eggs

  • Eating infected mice or rodents, birds, rabbits--worms can live in their intestinal walls

  • Eating the larvae or eggs of worms in fecal matter or in grass--worms are shed in poop!

  • Eating raw meat or prey that's infected with worms

  • Mother's milk can pass it to kittens or puppies

4

  • 4-6 in. long inside the intestine

  • Will be infected for about 6 months before segments are seen in stool, attached to fur, or where animal sleeps

  • Transmitted to dogs and cats through ingesting fleas

  • Dead once pooped out and look like tiny grains of rice

  • Can cause vomiting, but animals usually aren't sick

  • Scooting NOT from tapeworm but skin irritation or irritated anal sacs
