Missouri Compromise
As new states were added, leaders from slave and free states argued over weather or not they would be slave or free states. In 1819 Missouri petitioned to be added to the United States as a slave state. At the time the Union had 11 free and 11 slave states

Adding another slave state would mean that the Senate would have more Senators from slave states. After much back and forth and debate, Henry Clay convinced Congress to agree to a compromise. This became known as the Missouri Compromise.
