In today's lesson we are going to review all the different aspects of German grammar that we have covered since the start of year 7.

We are going to focus on producing accurate German using all the different bits of grammar we have learned about.​

Gender in German

Let's start with genders in German.

We have 3 genders - masculine, feminine and neuter​ (plural isn't a gender, but it looks like feminine).

This means there are 3 words for 'the'

and 3 words for 'a/an'.​

The accusative case

We have seen 3 words for 'the' and 'a/an' in

German. When we are talking about the object in

the sentence, the masculine word for 'the' and 'a/an' changes. See the table for an example.

How do we work out the object of the sentence? E.g. what am I drinking? What am I wearing? What do I have? The answer to these questions is the object in the sentence.

Adjective endings

In German, the adjective comes before the noun. The ending of the adjective changes depending on the gender of the noun. See the table for the different endings.

Verb as second idea

In a German sentence with one verb, the verb has to be the second idea in the sentence. Think of an 'idea' as a piece of information. This could be one word, or more than word. E.g. 'I', 'on the weekend' or 'in the school'. Sometimes you need to rearrange the order of the sentence so that the verb is the second

idea. Notice what happens to 'I' in the

sentence if we start with 'am Wochenende'​

Verb kickers

Sometimes the word order changes in a sentence. Some words, like 'weil' (because) and 'obwohl' (although) kick the verb to the end of the sentence.

Possessive adjectives

We have seen the words for a/an. To use the words for my/your/his, etc, we just need to add a letter. 'Her' is slightly different.

To say 'no' as in 'I have no...' or 'I don't have', we add a 'k'.

The masculine words also add 'en' to the end when they are the object.​
