You cannot add, subtract, multiply or divide with values written as percents.
BUT you CAN with DECIMALS and FRACTIONS.
We must convert percentages to the equivalent fraction or decimal value in order to operate with them!
11
When will I use this information about percents?
12
Read through the example on how to calculate tax.
In order to determine what you will end up paying in total you must add the item cost + dollar amount due for tax.
Example
$60 + 4.50 = total $64.50
Calculating Tax!
13
Draw
You need to pay 8% tax on a car that costs $12,000. What will you end up paying in total?
14
Multiple Choice
If you must pay the cost of the car ($12,000), and also pay an 8% tax, which of the following percentages represents what you will end up paying in total?
8%
100%
92%
108%
15
Read through the example on how to calculate a discount.
In order to determine what you will end up paying in total you must subtract the item cost + dollar amount of discount.
Example
$449.95 - $67.49 = total $382.46
Calculating Discounts!

Burritos are on sale for 30% off. Your favorite burrito normally costs $8.50. How much does it cost now?

A pair of shoes that originally cost $79 is on sale for 35% off. Does the expression 0.65(79) represent the sale price of the shoes, in dollars?
Yes!
No!
19
Yes! If the shoes are on sale for 35 % off, 100%-35%=65% so you are still responsible for paying the remaining 65% .
20
Multiple Choice
If an item originally costs $65.99. Their is not a sale, discount, or tax on the item. What is 100% of the cost of the item?
$65.99
$131.98
$32.99
$69.95
21
Consider multiple ways to correctly calculate!
Scenario:
"A one-night stay at a hotel in Anaheim, CA costs $160. Hotel room occupancy tax is 15%. What is the total cost of a one-night stay?
You can either multiply the cost of the room by 0.15, then add the tax to the cost of the room (expression 1) , or you can recognize total is 115% of the room cost because 100% of the room cost +15% for tax is 115% (expression 2).
Both ways will result in the correct calculation/answer!
22
Multiple Select
Scenario: " The population of a city was 842,000 ten years ago. The city now has 2% more people than it had then."
SELECT ALL of the expressions that can be used to calculate the population of the city now.
842,000 + 0.02(842,000)
1.02⋅(842,000)
842,000 +0.98(842,000)
1.20 ⋅(842,000)
0.98⋅(842,000)
23
Something to think about:
