PRACTICE:
Some historians claim that the first donut was made in the 1800s. At what point in the 1800s is not clear. One story says that donuts were invented in North America in the mid-1800s by the same Dutch settlers who brought us cookies, apple pie, and cobblers. These settlers cooked a dessert made of fried dough and stuffed with nuts or fruit. They called it an oil cake. These oil cakes were like today’s filled donuts. The other popular story is that in 1847, a 16-year-old American named Hanson Gregory made the first donut with a hole in the center while cooking aboard a trading ship. Gregory didn’t like the fact that the middle of donuts was still raw after cooking. He cut the middle out with a pepper box. That made it possible to fully cook donuts. The author Paul R. Mullins has made the donut’s history more complicated. He claims that the first cookbook to mention donuts was an 1803 English cookbook that listed donuts among other American recipes.
