62
What was Trench Warfare?

The trenches were heavily defended with machine gun nests and barbed wire to prevent being taken by the enemy.
To take an enemy trench soldiers had to assault the trench over No Mans Land- the dead ground between the trench lines, and then engage in brutal hand to hand fighting to take over the trench.
63
The trenches put the war into a state of stalemate- neither side could push the other back, and neither side had the advantage.
64
The Trench
The trench was a deep ditch, dug deep and fortified with sand bags and wooden planks to prevent them being destroyed by shells and collapse. They were protected at the front by barbed wire, mines and machine guns. The trenches were deep enough for a man to stand in.
65
No Mans Land
This was the area between the German and Allied trenches. It was a blasted and destroyed because of all the artillery and bombs. It turned to mud when it rained.
