The most serious issue that arose was the Pope's authority. The pope believed that he was in charge of all churches. Many Byzantines thought it was unfair and that the patriarch of Constantinople and other Byzantine bishops had just as much power as the pope.

Issues

In the late A.D 700s, a foreign army invaded Italy. The pope turned to the Byzantine emperor and asked for help. He refused, so the pope asked the Germanic people for help. Thankfully, they did and sucessfully defended Rome. The pope crowned Charlemange, which only angered the Byzantines more.
