​The Imperative verb form is used to give orders, instructions, make requests and even advise someone.

  • Go away! – Vá embora!

  • Do it now! – Faça isso agora!

  • Eat the salad. – Coma a salada.

  • Run faster! – Corra mais rápido!

  • Sit down! – Sente-se

  • Help me! – Me ajude!

  • Look over there! – Olhe pra lá!

  • Tell me what you want. – Me diga o que você quer.

  • Find the keys, now! – Ache as chaves, agora!

  • Be careful! – Tome cuidado!

​Use the base form of the verb in affirmative imperatives:

Go home and rest.

Use don't + base form of the verb in negative imperatives:​

Don't be late!​

  • Close the door when you leave. – Feche a porta quando você sair.

  • Turn the TV down. Desligue a televisão.

  • Clean your bedroom first. - Limpe seu quarto primeiro.

  • Fill in the blanks. – Preencha os espaços em branco.

  • Please go to your room! – Por favor, vá para o seu quarto!

  • Call my mother, please! – Ligue para a minha mãe, por favor!

IMPERATIVE AFFIRMATIVE

Esta é a forma mais comum e direta do imperativo. Existe apenas a segunda pessoa do singular e do plural. É formado usando o infinitivo do verbo sem o "to".

Hurry up or you will miss the show!

(Apresse-se ou você vai perder o show!)

IMPERATIVE NEGATIVE

A forma negativa do imperativo afirmativo requer a adição do auxiliar do + not (don’t em sua forma contraída) para ser adicionada à versão infinitiva do verbo sem o "to".

Don’t work too much.

(Não trabalhe tanto.)

Utilizamos o imperativo para:

  • Para dar uma ordem

Wash the dishes, Leonardo! (Lave as vasilhas, Leonardo!)

Turn off the radio! (Desligue o som!)

Listen to me! (Me ouça!)

  • Para fazer um pedido

Please, help me! (Por favor, me ajude!)

Please, stop singing. I’m trying to think! (Por favor, pare de cantar! Eu estou tentando pensar!)

Open your books on page 23! (Abram seus livros na página 23!)

Utilizamos o imperativo para:

  • Para dar um conselho

Take care! (Se cuide!)

Be careful! (Tenha cuidado!)

Watch out! There’s a stone. (Olhe! Tem uma pedra.)

  • Para fazer um oferecimento

Have a cup of coffee! (Tome uma xícara de café.)

Have a rest before the homework. (Descanse antes da tarefa de casa.)

Have another piece of cake. (Pegue mais um pedaço de bolo.)
