Openly remind your audience who you are: "As the leading researcher, I agree..."
Establish authority through use of specialized terms (jargon) "My quantitative research in linguistic anthropology has shown..."
Establish credibility through the use of correct grammar and language and the use of solid reasoning and good arguments.

Pathos
Greek word meaning "suffering" or "experience"
It is an appeal to the listener's emotions
used to evoke an emotional response, causing the listener to care about what you are saying

Ways to use Pathos
Use descriptive language and imagery: "This life-saving dishwasher will enhance your life and lighten your load..."
Identify values/ emotions which relate particularly to your audience, and play on them: " I know you care about your family, so..."
Use personal stories to appeal to the sympathies and emotions of your audience: "When I lost my job, I knew how important it was to..."

Greek word meaning "a word" or "reason"
It is an appeal to logic or reason
Used to persuade an audience through the use of logical thought, facts, and rationality

Ways to use Logos
Use research and statistics to back up your arguments: "Eighty-seven percent of students benefit from textbooks, so..."
Use logical process to explain your point- if this, than that- : "if you don't want gum disease, then you should brush regularly."
Give convincing, solid evidence and reasons to support your claims: "I need a car: it would make more more independent; save me money; improve my life."
