  • In the United States, we pay money to the government whenever we buy things.

  • This money is called "Sales Tax."

  • The government uses this money to pay for roads, schools, fire departments, snow plows, and other things all people need.

  • In Massachusetts, the sales tax is 6%. For every dollar in an item's price, we pay 6 cents to the government.

  • The sales tax is not written on the price tag, so we need to predict it.

  • To predict the sales tax, we do:

    • Dollar amount X 6 = Tax

  • We add the tax, in cents, to the price tag to find out what to pay.
