Cell Cycle & Mitosis

Mitosis
3
Mitosis
* Mitosis is the type of cell division that leads to growth or cell repair
When the cell divides by mitosis:
two new cells are formed
each cell is identical to the other one, and the cell they were formed from

Multiple Choice
At the end of mitosis, what develops around each set of chromosomes?
cytoplasm
DNA
cell wall
nuclear envelope
5
Multiple Choice
What is the end result of mitosis?
Two new cells with identical sets of chromosomes
Two new cells with different sets of chromosomes
One cell with two identical sets of chromosomes
One cell with two different sets of chromosomes
6
Match
Interphase
Mitosis
Cytokinesis
The cell is getting ready to divide. It grows in size and all DNA is replicated.
Chromatids align at the center, separate to opposite ends & prepare for division of cytoplasm.
Cytoplasm is pinched inward. Two daughter cells are formed and each identical to the original cell.

Match
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
DNA condenses into chromosomes, nuclear envelope disappears
Identical chromatids align at the center held together by a centromere
Centromeres divide; spindle fibers attach to them. Cell becomes elongated
Chromatids arrive at opposite poles. Nuclear envelope form; DNA loosens & expands

Cell Cycle & Mitosis
The Cell Cycle is the series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide.
During the Cell Cycle, a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form two daughter cells, each of which begins the cycle again.
Interphase is the period of growth that occurs between cell division
Interphase is divided into three phases: G1, S, & G2
11
G1 Phase
The G1 phase is a period of activity in which cells do most of their growing. Cells will increase in size and synthesize new proteins and organelles.
12
S Phase
The S phase replicates chromosomes and synthesizes DNA molecules. When DNA replication is completed, the cell enters the G2 phase.
13
G2 Phase
During the G2 phase, many of the organelles and molecules required for cell division are produced.
When G2 is completed, the cell is ready to enter the M phase.
14
Mitosis are divided into four phases: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, & telophase
