What are the 3 States of Matter?

1

Gas, Fire & Drinks

2

Solid, Liquid, & Gas

3

Solid, Ice Cube, & Gas

4

Steam, Gas, & Liquid

2

Define Dissolving

the process that occurs when a solute (sugar) is added to a solvent (liquid) and the solute disappears.

t

Have you ever seen anything being dissolved?

3

media

If you are like Tony here, you prefer your koolaid with sugar. Koolaid (the solute) is a solution in which sugar is dissolved in a liquid (the solvent) which is mostly water. When you add sugar to water, particles of the water pull apart particles of the sugar. The particles of the sugar spread throughout the koolaid, making all of it taste sweet.

4

Multiple Select

Did you ever get impatient and start drinking a sweetened drink before all the sugar has dissolved? As you drink the last few drops, you notice that some of the sugar is sitting on the bottom of the container?

1

Yes

2

No

3

Sometimes

4

Never noticed it

5

One Factor that affects the rate of dissolving is Stirring.

  • Stirring 2 different substance speeds up the rate of dissolving because it helps distribute the solute particles throughout the solvent.

-for example, when you add sugar to iced tea and then stir the tea, the sugar will dissolve faster

-if you don't stir the iced tea, the sugar may eventually dissolve, but it will take much longer.

6

One factor that affects the rate of dissolving is: Temperature

The temperature of one substance is another factor that affects how fast another substance dissolve making it a mixture. Generally, a substance dissolves faster in a warmer matter than a cooler one because particles have more energy of movement.

-for example, if you add the same amount of sugar to a cup of hot tea and a cup of iced tea, the sugar will dissolve faster in the cup of hot tea.

7

Multiple Choice

When will the sugar dissolve faster:

1

When mixed with Iced Tea

2

When mixed with plain hot water

3

When mixed with Iced Coffee

4

When mixed with Koolaid

8

media

Smaller Particles have a greater surface area, there can be more contact between the substances

-if you put granulated sugar in a Iced Tea it will dissolve quicker than than the same amount of sugar in a cube, because all those Tiny molecules of granulated sugar have greater total surface area than a single sugar cube

Think of the cube sugar as a solid (because it has a shape) and the granulated sugar as a liquid (because it has no definite shape)

Affects the rate of dissolving is: Particle size

9

Multiple Choice

True or False

The rate of dissolving two substances is faster when stirring them?

1

True

2

False

10

Multiple Choice

True or False

The rate of dissolving is affected if the substance consists of smaller particles with more surface area. (meaning the molecules are spread apart)

1

True

2

Fales

11

Multiple Choice

You want to make chocolate milk using Hershey's syrup. How could you speed up the rate of the syrup dissolving in your milk?

1

Put the syrup in the fridge to cool before putting it in the milk

2

Put the syrup in the milk and let it sit

3

Increase the amount of syrup you put into the milk

4

Warm up the syrup before putting it into the milk

12

Multiple Choice

Jackson is making dinner and is trying to dissolve salt into a pot of water. The salt is dissolving slowly. What should Jackson do to speed up the rate of dissolving?

1

He should put larger salt particles in the water.

2

He should heat the water to a higher temperature.

3

He should completely stop stirring the pot of water.

4

He should slow down the speed he is stirring the pot.
