What is a Common Noun?

A common noun is ANY person, place or thing.


People: girl, boy, lady, man, men children

Place: store, park, school, airport

Thing: car, chips, drink, candy

Common Nouns

Name any person, place, thing, or idea. They are not capitalized unless they come at the beginning of a sentence.

  • Proper Noun is the name or title of a specific person, place, or organization

    • ​Example - Jack, Morningside Elementary School, Department of Education

  • Proper Nouns begin with capital letters

  • ​If the proper noun has more than one word, EACH important word begins with a capital letter.
