The nine parts of speech
Some people say there are eight parts of speech, others say nine parts of speech, while others say ten. It all depends how you group them. For the purposes of my class, we will consider NINE parts of speech.

Some and any are examples of quantifiers.

A PRONOUN replaces a noun.
Examples:
Person: Justin Bieber
Place: Thailand
Thing: concert
Idea: happiness
A NOUN is a person, place, thing, or idea.
Nouns and Pronouns
There are also possessive and reflexive pronouns, which we will study later.

Examples:
Articles: a/an/the
Demonstratives: this, that, these Quantifiers: some, any, every, all
A DETERMINER comes before a noun to show what it being referred to.
Examples:
beautiful
old
exciting
tired
An ADJECTIVE modifies a noun. (It answers "what kind of".)
Adjectives and Determiners
Notice that some adjectives (exciting, tired) are formed from verbs.

Examples:
ran quickly
ran very quickly
very beautiful dress
An ADVERB modifies a verb (1), another adverb (2), or an adjective (3).
A VERB shows an action or a state of being.
Verbs and Adverbs
An adverb answers the question "when, where, how, and how much/many".
Examples:
Action: run, sing, fly, do
State: be, mean, seem, feel

A CONJUNCTION connects words or phrases.

An INTERJECTION is an expression of feeling rather than meaning.
A PREPOSITION a word or phrase used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object.
Prepositions and Interjections
English has over 100 prepositions.
Examples: in, at, on, of, to, between, with, among.
