Lesson Objetives

Recall

• recall that in the accretion model of planet formation, the solar

system was originally a large cloud of gas and dust,

Recall

• recall that in the accretion model of planet formation, the cloud of

gas and dust contracts due to gravity and forms a rotating disk,

Recall

• recall that the Sun forms in the center of the disk,

Recall

• recall that planets form from the outer disk,

Recall

• recall that there are other theories of planetary formation.

The formation of the
Solar System

The solar system formed 4 billion years ago (aprox)

The Solar System is thought to have formed from nebula.

A nebula is a large cloud of gas and dust in space. Nebulae are
very diferente the clouds we see on Earth. Most nebulae are
bigger tan our entire solar system, this theory is called "Solar Nebula Theory"

The nebula in the photo is called the “Pillars of the creation”
Because sciencist see star system beginning to form inside it.

Multiple Choice

What is the name of the theory that is used to explain the formation of the solar system?

1

Big Bang Theory

The Solar System

Our solar system is made up of the Sun and

all the things that orbit it, for intance:
Planets, asteroids, moons, comets, and
more. and was made for and old star explosion

Our home planet, the earth, is the thrid

planet orbiting the Sun.

In the next image to the right shows the

largest objets in the Solar System. Even
though the sizes and distances are not
shown to scalate.

Gravity

Gravity is a force that pulls objects with mass

together.

The gravity holds the solar system together

now, and it also helped the solar system
begin to form billions of years ago.

The solar system began as a cloud of gas and

dust particles, and gravity pulled all the
particles in the cloud close together, the
cloud contracted and got smaller.

11

Multiple Choice

What is the principal function of the gravity.

1

Push the objets

2

Nothing

3

Pull objets with mass together

2

Nuclear Fission

14

Multiple Choice

Accretion is the process of the formation of planets when

1

clumps of dust, ice, and other material hit and stuck together

2

clumps of dust, ice, and other material hit and repelled each other.

15

Multiple Choice

Where did the lighter elements go?

1

Pushed out by solar wind to the inner planets

2

Pushed out by the solar wind to the outer planets

16
