Challenges Encountered by Learners of English as a Second Language

18

media

Difficult to tell who is a good English teacher and who isn't.

Unqualified teachers

19

media

In most cases, students only make an effort to speak proper English in the classroom when they are under supervision. Students don’t always hear people around them speaking proper English. As a result, it becomes more difficult to learn correct English.

Limited learning environments

20

media

Items that aid in the learning process. Use books but can’t tell how certain words are said. Online resources. Human help and lots of practice.

Inadequate learning materials

21

media

Street vs Academic English. English studied only in the classroom when the teacher is teaching. Little practice.

Students don't take their studies seriously

22

Students learn another language best when they're forced to use it.

Over-use of native language in the class

26

Thriving students

They go to class and do their assignments, but their academic involvement goes deeper than that. They are excited by, interested, and engaged in what they are learning.

They discuss what they are learning outside of the classroom and they assimilate and apply it to their lives.

Their studies and research often go beyond the minimum required for a class or a grade. They love what they are studying.

They are intentional about how they use their time and they put in a great deal of effort – they are the ones who live up to the definition of “full-time” student

27

Surviving students

Still attending class and fulfilling all of their academic requirements

Working their way towards graduation

Not as involved in campus and learning activities as a thriving student

Sees their education as a means to an end: “I’m going to college to get my degree and get a good job. I’m not here to make friends.”

Certain groups like re-entry students, transfer students, those who are struggling financially, and commuter students often have a more difficult time connecting to their campus community.

Outside, home and personal demands and limited time and resources are often to blame.

28

Languishing students

Languishing students almost always have the academic ability (potential) to do well but may be unprepared to do the work (study skills; foundation knowledge and skills; personal problems etc)

Languishing students will inconsistently attend class.

Languishing students will not ask questions or ask for or get help,

Blame their professors and others for their bad grades or lack of understanding course content.

They submit poor quality work.

They do not participate in class.

They make excuses for not doing well instead of taking responsibility.
