Some verbs form the passé composé with
être, not avoir, as the auxillary or
helping verb.

Par exemple:

Michelle a parlé au téléphone avec ses copines!
Michelle est restée à la maison hier soir.

3. Add an -s to the past participle if the subject is masculine and plural.

1. Add and e to a past participle if the subject is singular and feminine.

2. Add -es to a past participle if the subject is plural and feminine

The past participle must agree in number and gender with the subject if the verb is conjugated with être.

Michelle a dejeuné avec ses copines hier à midi.

Michelle est sortie avec ses copines
hier soir.

Michelle est rentrée chez-elle
en retard.

Michelle a fait ses devoirs après
minuit!

Ses copines sont allées à la station de sports d’hiver le

dernier weekend.

These are often referred to as the
Dr. Mrs. Van der Trampp verbs due to the acronym to the left.

These verbs are intransitive and never have direct objects.

They usually refer to movement back and fort, from one place to
another, or up and down or to location or to a state of being.

When you use etre to form the passe compose, you

must make the past participle agree with the
subject of the sentence.

Look at the previous sentences:

With être

the subject is singular and feminine

Elle est sortie avec ses copines hier soir.

There is no agreement because the auxillary verb is avoir.

Elle a fait ses devoirs a minuit hier soir.

The subject is plural and feminine.
Ses copines sont allées à la station de sports

d’hiver le dernier weekend.

Il est sorti avec ses copains hier soir.

Il a fait ses devoirs après minuit! (no agreement)
Ses copains sont allés à la station
de sports d’hiver le
dernier weekend.

Make the following subjects and verbs agree:

masculine and singular, so it agrees
without adding anything.
