Parts of a neuron

Cell Body has 2 extensions
Dendrites which receive input
Axons- send information away from
the cell as an impulse

Cell Body is surrounded by
neuroglia

The small spaces between the
neuron and the cell it is
communicating is called the synapse

Role of Neurons

-Neurons are the functional units of the
nervous system

-Responsible for conducting the electrical
impulses that are sent in reaction to
changes in the body’s environment

-This is how neurons communicate with
one another and surrounding cells

-The small spaces between the neuron and the
cell it is communicating is called the synapse

-

8

Multiple Choice

the role of the neuron is to

choose the best answer

1

conduct electrical impulses

2

conduct impulses caused by stimuli from the external environment

3

communicate a an impulse from the environment with other cells

4

Organs of the Nervous System

Central Nervous System (CNS) - consists of the brain and
spinal cord

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) consist of the the nerves
that connect the CNS to the rest of the body parts

1.Sensory Receptors converts the environmental
information into impulses

2.Those impulses are conducted through
peripheral neurons all the way to the central
nervous system

3.This is then integrated to create a memory or a
thought to perceive the sneation the body is
feeling

4. Then a motor function is enacted in reaction to that thought

Peripheral Nervous System

Motor functions can be divided
into two categories

-Voluntarily control which
somatic nervous system,
skeletal muscle

-Involuntary which
autonomic nervous system
such as cardiac and smooth
muscle.

-Your body detects and
responds to stimuli and
counteracts the effects to help
maintain homeostasis.

Types of Neuroglia

1.Microglial cells- are scattered throughout the
central nervous system

-Support neurons, phagocytize bacterial
cells and debris

2.Oligodendrocytes- align along the axons which
provide the insulated layers around the axon
called myelin sheath within the brain and spinal
cord

3.Astrocytes- found between neurons and blood
vessels, they provide structural support and
regulate nutrients for growth

-Also form scar tissue if injury occurs in the
CNS

4.Ependymal cells- epithelial-like membrane that
covers specialized brain parts

Homeostasis

Homeostasis is how you rboyd responds to stimuli from your external environment

Mechanisms involve are
1.Receptors- receive the stimuli and perceive it

2.

Set Point- tells what they oyd should be at

3.

Effectors-response and alters condition in the internal environment

There are two type of feedback loops.

Negative feedback loop which is you body responding to counter the stimuli that is
perceived

Positive feedback loop which your body will continue a response to a stimuli until the stimuli
is gone

22
