6

" A dime a dozen "

Why does it mean that?

A dime is worth 10 cents - it is a small amount of money

A dozen means 12 of something.

The idiom means we can buy 12 of something for only 10 cents. If we can buy 12 of something for only 10 cents, then that thing must be very common and not special.

" Burn the candle at both ends "

Why does it mean that?

Think of the days when there wasn’t electricity and people worked by candlelight; you can imagine someone using one end of the candle to work at night and then burning the other end of the candle early in the morning.
