7
Lesson Objectives
Discuss the reproductive process in Gymnosperms
Discuss the reproductive process in Angiosperms
Discuss different types of fruit
8
Gymnosperms
The reproductive structure of most gymnosperms is the cone
There are two types of cones
Male
Female:
Some species produce both types, but some only have one type per plant
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
9
Gymnosperms: Male Cones
Male cones produce pollen
Tend to be smaller, and bunched together on a branch
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
10
Gymnosperms: Female Cones
Female cones contain ovules
Ovule: Structure that contains an egg cell
There is at least one ovule at the base of each scale
Two egg cells form in each ovule on the female cone
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
11
Gymnosperm Pollination
Wind carries pollen from the male cone to the female cone
Each Ovule produces a glue-like substance to catch the pollen and keep it from blowing away
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
12
Gymnosperm Fertilization & Seed Development
After Pollen is collected, the ovule closes and traps the pollen
Scales also close to keep the zygote safe
Female cones remain on the tree until fully mature
Can take up to two years
Cones grow in size as they mature
Male cones fall of the tree once they run out of pollen
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
13
Gymnosperm Seed Dispersal
Once the seeds fully mature, the female cones open back up
Wind shakes the cones and the seeds fall out
Only a few seeds will land in a spot suitable for growth
Animals may move cones and seeds to new locations
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
14
Multiple Choice
True or False: Most Gymnosperms produce both male and female fruit.
True
False
15
Multiple Choice
True or False: The female cone of gymnosperm has scales
True
False
16
Angiosperm Reproduction
Angiosperm reproduction involves two unique structures
Flower: Location where fertilization occurs
Fruit: Location that stores the seeds
Pollination occurs in different ways depending on the flower
Animals can pollinate a flower
Wind can blow pollen
Some Pollen floats across the water
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
17
Angiosperm Fertilization
When pollen lands on the stigma of a plant, it is trapped by a sticky substance called exudate
Pollen produces a pollen tube that grows into the ovule and sends the sperm into the egg
Once the egg is fertilized, the ovule starts to grow the seed structures
The rest of the ovary delevopes into a fruit
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
18
Fruit
Fruit: A ripened ovary that encloses one or more seeds
Two Broad Categories
Fleshy Fruits
Have extra tissue surrounding the seed
Contains liquid
Dry Fruits
Are eaten by my animals to help disperse seeds
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
19
Fleshy Fruits: Berries
Have two types of soft flesh tissue with lots of seeds inside
Examples:
Raspberries
Tomatoes
Bananas
Strawberries are not Berries because their seeds are on the outside of the fruit
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
20
Fleshy Fruits: Pepo
Have soft tissue and hard tissue surrounding multiple seeds
are sometimes considered a modified berry
Examples:
Squash
Watermelon
Cucumbers
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
21
Fleshy Fruits: Drupes
Have soft tissue and hard tissue surrounding a single seed
Hard tissue is called a pit
Examples:
mangoes
peaches
plums
avocado
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
22
Fleshy Fruits: Multiple Fruits
Multiple Ovaries fuse together to make one massive fruit
Examples
Pineapple
Breadfruit
Figs
Ohio Grade 8 Science | Lesson 7.2
