What kind of natural disasters do you know?

3

Heat is another form of energy.

Much of the heat energy comes from the sun.

Heat also comes from within the earth.

Heat drives many of earth's natural phenomena

Humans use heat to power our industries and homes.

We are able to use heat properly by learning how heat is transferred

6

Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact of molecules.

Metals are good conductors - they allow heat to move easily.

Insulators like rubber, wood, or plastic prevent heat from moving too fast.

Convection is the transfer of heat through fluid motion.

Convection is possible in liquids and gasses.

When fluids are heated, their molecules move faster and expand. They go up and down in a convection current.

Heat moves from hot to cold. In oceans for example, convection causes waves and currents.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through waves.

In conduction, heat is transferred through contact of solids. In convection, it is transferred through liquids and gasses. In radiation, heat is transferred through empty space by electromagnetic waves.

You just baked some cookies in the oven, and its time to bring them out. Knowing about conductors and insulators, how should this be done?

1

Lift the metal tray out of the oven.

2

Take out each cookie one by one by hand.

3

Use oven mitts to bring out the tray.

Heat moves form warmer to colder objects or areas. What happens when you open up the refrigerator for too long?

1

The cold air gets out.

2

The hot air outside gets inside the refrigerator.

3

The hot air outside the fridge turns into cold air.
