Objectives:

Aims:

This Week..

  • Introduce and develop learners' knowledge and understanding relating to postural defects.

  • Introduce and develop knowledge and understanding of preventative measures that can minimise injury potential.

  1. Correctly identify three postural defects that affects the spine.

  2. Discuss roles and responsibilities of a coach in preventing sports injuries.

8

Activity 1 - Group Discussion

•With the person next to you, discuss what you think

'postural defects' are.

9

Your spine should curve a little in your neck, upper back

and lower back.

media

Everyone has slight curves however some people have more

prominent curvature.

 (Healthline, 2019)

These curves help your body:

•Absorb shock

Support the weight of the head

•Align your head over your pelvis

•Stabilize and maintain its structure, move and bend flexibly

Postural Defects

12

This can lead to excess pressure on the spine, causing pain and discomfort and effect your ability to move if its severe and left untreated.

 (Healthline, 2019)

Lordosis is the inwards curve of the lumbar spine.

Lordosis

Lordosis can affect your lower back and neck.

media

13

Lordosis Symptoms

  • The most commons symptom is muscular pain due to the spine curving abnormally - the muscles get pulled in different directions

  • numbness

  • tingling

  • electric shock pains

  • weak bladder control

  • difficulty maintaining muscle control

14

There are different types of kyphosis, including postural kyphosis and Scheuermann’s kyphosis.

Kyphosis is a curving of the upper spine that often gives the upper back a rounded or slouched look. The curvature is front-to-back.

Kyphosis

Kyphosis can occur at any age, although it is rare at birth.

15

Kyphosis Symptoms

•Back pain

•Muscular fatigue

•Stiffness

•Slouching

•Breathing difficulties

•Visible change of posture

16

There is no cure although the symptoms can be reduced

(Charles Patrick Davis, 2019).

Scoliosis is a medical condition where the spine twists and curves to the side. It can affect people of any age, from babies to adults, although most often starts in children aged 10 to 15. Scoliosis doesn't normally improve without treatment, but it isn't usually a sign of anything serious.

Scoliosis

Depending on the severity of the curve and the risk of getting worse, it can be treated with observation, bracing or surgery.

17

Scoliosis Symptoms

•Uneven shoulders

•One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other

•Uneven waist

•One hip higher than the other

•Leaning to one side

•Back pain

•Bone damage

Open Ended

Question image

Discussion: How could postural defects lead to sporting injuries. What activities could be problematic for athletes with postural defects?

20

Increased risk of knee and hip injuries due to the change in hip angle.

Reduced balance, especially during lifting exercises, i.e. squats and deadlifts.

Lordosis - Injury Risk

21

Increased risk of shoulder injuries resulting from the restriction of movement in the upper body.

Individuals can have weaker upper back muscles, which can lead to additional weaknesses and muscular tears.

Kyphosis - Injury Risk

22

This can lead to athletes not being balanced and an injury occurring during resistance training.

The body's natural balance can be disturbed due to the curvature of the spine.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Coach in Helping Prevent Injuries

24

Activity 2 - Group Discussion

•You are to research online and discuss what roles and responsibilities a coach has in helping to prevent injuries from occurring.

25

•Up-to-date knowledge of sport/performer

•Relevant and current qualifications

•Adapting coaching style to performers ability / age / fitness level

•Effective communication

styles

•Knowledge of Health and safety considerations

Possible Answers

26

Up-to-date knowledge of sport/performer

•Laws of the games change a lot. Laws normally change to protect players for injuries.

•Knowledge of the sport how to delivery correct technique.

Relevant and current qualifications

•Keeping qualifications to date. Ensuring you are teaching correct technique

•Ensure you are delivering the correct practice.

Adapting coaching style to performers ability/age/fitness level

•Making sure you are working to your group's ability.

•Working towards the correct age range appropriate practice.

Effective communication styles

•Being able to communicate with the performer what is correct technique.

•Be able to communicate with the performer if they are not producing correct technique.

Health and safety considerations

•Ensuring you are doing risk assessment prior to training to ensure area is safe to reduce injury risk.

•Ensuring you have checked your athletes' are able to take part e.g injuries.
