Multiple Choice
Which sentence would describe the picture in the passive voice?
The mail carrier tosses the letters in the air.
The letters are tossed in the air.
3
Multiple Choice
¿Es voz activa o voz pasiva?
Voz activa
Voz pasiva
4
Why use the passive voice?
Passive Voice is useful:
for keeping the focus on the topic or experience, rather than the agent;
keeping the identity of the agent hidden; or
if the identity of t.he agent is unknown
5
Notice the subject change. Poetry was the direct object, but has now become the subject. Mary is no longer central and can be left out of the sentence, altogether, if desired: Poetry is written.
6
Hotspot
Identify the sentence that is in passive voice. Ask yourself, what is the focus of each sentence (what is the subject)? Is it the event or the agent? (Who is the agent?)
7
Passive Voice with SE
and
Passive Voice with SER + past participle
There are two forms of passive voice in Spanish.
8
La voz pasiva con SE
(Used when the agent is not known or is not important and will not be identified in the sentence.)
9
Estas frases están en voz pasiva...
¿Cómo se dice?
¿Cómo se escribe?
Se habla mucho español en Miami.
10
Se celebra el campeonato en nuestra casa cada cuatro años.
Combine SE + the 3rd person singular or plural form of the verb to create the passive voice.
One can assume the agent is us, but the agent is never identified explicitly with this form.
11
Multiple Choice
"Se ha celebrado el campeonato" significa...
We have celebrated the championship.
The championship has been celebrated.
Let's celebrate the championship.
12
We could say:
Nosotros hemos celebrado el campeonato en nuestra casa. (Voz activa)
or
Se ha celebrado el campeonato en nuestra casa. (Voz pasiva)
Which sentence emphasizes the event over the agent?
Why might we not worry about identifying the agent (we/us) in the second sentence?
13
Start with SE.
The verb is conjugated in 3rd person, singular or plural.
Add the thing that is celebrated. The verb matches the object.
Add other relevant information (e.g., when, where, how, why, etc.)

Se ha narrado el partido en vivo.
Se va a revelar el sexo del bebé en la fiesta.
Se están perdiendo muchos idiomas indígenas ahora.
No se habían apagado las luces todavía.
17
Note 2:
The direct object (now the subject) can
be placed before or after the SE.
Por ejemplo:
___
Muchas catedrales se construyeron durante la Edad Media y el Renacimiento.
El partido se ha narrado en vivo.
El sexo del bebé se va a revelar en la fiesta.
Muchos idiomas indígenas se están perdiendo ahora.
Las luces no se habían apagado todavía.

Start with the new subject (used to be the direct object).
Conjugate SER according to the subject in the tense you need.
Add the past participle and make sure it agrees with the subject. It functions as an adjective here.
(Optional) Add the agent (who celebrated?), using POR + agente.
