​​Why use the passive voice?

Passive Voice is useful:

• for keeping the focus on the topic or experience, rather than the agent;

• keeping the identity of the agent hidden; or

• if the identity of t.he agent is unknown

Notice the subject change. Poetry was the direct object, but has now become the subject. Mary is no longer central and can be left out of the sentence, altogether, if desired: Poetry is written.

(Used when the agent is not known or is not important and will not be identified in the sentence.)

Se celebra el campeonato en nuestra casa cada cuatro años.

​Combine SE + the 3rd person singular or plural form of the verb to create the passive voice.

One can assume the agent is us, but the agent is never identified explicitly with this form.

La voz pasiva con SER

Start with the new subject (used to be the direct object).

​​Add the past participle and make sure it agrees with the subject. It functions as an adjective here.
