Who is an
ABOLITIONIST?
An abolitionist is someone who
wants to ABOLISH, or DO
AWAY WITH, slavery. They are
ANTI-SLAVERY! They believe
it is not right for someone to
“own” another.

Why did some want SLAVERY?
So, why were some people IN FAVOR of slavery?
In a word--- MONEY! Defenders of slavery argued that the
sudden end of slavery would kill the economy of the South
(including South Carolina) and the money from cotton,
tobacco and rice would cease.
They also argued that if all the slaves were freed, there
would be widespread UNEMPLOYMENT and CHAOS . This
would lead to uprisings and bloodshed. They argued to keep
slavery which provided wealth and stability for many.
