Listen Script
Ken(K): Hi, Jane. Did you enjoy your stay in your hometown?
Jane(J): Yes, of course! Here are the snacks you asked me to buy.
K: Thanks a lot! Oh, this is the receipt for them. Umm… sugar tax? What is that? I’ve never
heard of it.
J: Oh, sorry, I also bought some cans of soda at the store. In my hometown, a sugar tax is
imposed on sodas that contain a lot of sugar.
K: That’s surprising. As you know, we don’t have a sugar tax in Japan. Why is there a tax on
sodas?
J: It’s to promote our health. Consuming too much sugar can lead to health problems such as
obesity or high blood pressure. This tax can help prevent us from taking in too much sugar.
K: That sounds interesting, but does it work well?
J: Actually, some people disagree with the tax. They say it increases the financial burden on
many citizens. Low-income people tend to buy sodas because they are much cheaper than
natural fruit juices. This means they have to pay more for the tax.
K: I see. Whether this tax is good or not seems to be a difficult question.
