How to use

2

Used to and would are used to talk about past habits

Both express that the action was repeted frequently in the past, but not now . The action stopped being a habit at some point in the past.

Both are followed by a pure infinitive

  • I used to ride my bike to school

  • I would read for hours before going to bed

  • I used to think very poorly of grown-ups

NOTE: would can only be used with active verbs, not states

3

Get used to reflects the process of becoming familiar with an action or situation

We use get used to when we want to emphasize that a situation may require some effort for the speaker to adjust to it.

Get used to can appear in any tense, depending of whether the familirizing process is happening now, happened in the past, or will happen in the future.

Get used to is always followed by either a noun or an -ing verb.

  • I got used to the home office style of working very easily.

  • I am still getting used to having classes every week.

  • I think I'll get used to my new job in a couple of month.

4

Be use to expresses that a situation is already familiar to you.

We use this to express that the process of becoming familiar with something is over and we already mastered that action or situation.

It can also appear in any tense, according to the situation, but it's most common in present simple and past simple.

Be used to is always followed by either a noun or an -ing verb.

  • I am already used to taking on-line classes.

  • I thought she was used to our work dynamic, but maybe I was wrong.

  • He was used to working alone, so he had to learn to work as a team for his new position.
