When to use semi-colons?

Between two independent clauses

Remember, semi-colons are fancy periods. Use them like you would a period to separate two independent clauses that are not joined with a fanboy.

Don't use those oil paints; use watercolors instead.

When to use semi-colons?

Use a semicolon in a series of items that contain commas

My relatives live in Nashville, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; and Austin, Texas.
