What is Inverted Word Order?

Inverted word order is when the subject and the verb of the sentence
are switched. To be able to form a question, inverted word order is a
must.

Examples:
Du kommst spater. - You are coming later.
Kommst du spater? - Are you coming later?

Forming a question

First you must conjugate the verb that goes at the beginning of the sentence, following that is the subject, and then the rest of the sentence after that.

Forming questions (part 1)

If more than one verb is needed for the question, then the rest of the
verbs go at the end

Er (subject) lasst (conjugated verb) sich Haus (direct object) bauen (infinitive verb).
He's having a house built.

If you want to add somebody's name into it, you just put the name
directly in front or directly behind.

Forming a question (part 2)

  1. Another way to form a question is to start with a question word.
    Wie viele ist das?

  2. Indirect questions can be embedded in statements by placing the
conjugated verb at the end of a sentence and, obviously, using a
    period.

Er wird mir morgen erzählen, wie sein erster Arbeitstag war.
He will tell me tomorrow how his first day at work was.

27

Last Slide

  1. Indirect questions can also be embedded into another question the same way, instead just using a question mark.

Kannst du mir sagen, wo wir hingehen?
    Can you tell me
    where we are going?
