Trends in the
Periodic Table

Use the notes on these slides to help you answer the questions on page 4 and page 6 of your student journal.

2

Use your notes in your science notebook to draw and label the parts of an atom. Your drawing and labels must include the proton, neutron, electron, and each of their charges.

What is an element, and what makes elements unique?

Page 4, Part 2

4

An element is a pure substance that can not be separated into any other substances.
The atoms that make up each element have a specific number of protons.

How does atomic mass apply to density?

Page 4, Part 2

6

The heavier the atom, the heavier a substance made of that atom will be.
Mass affects density because Density=Mass/Volume.

7

How would you know if a substance was a metal or a non-metal?

Page 4, Part 2

8

Metals have specific properties that non-metals don't have:
they are shiny (luster)
they can change shape without breaking (malleable)
they are solid at room temperature
they are good conductors of electricity and heat

Block A

Elements in Block A will be solid at room temperature.
Elements in Block A will be metals.
Other predictions about Block A:
The elements have luster.
They are ductile and malleable.
They conduct electricity and thermal (heat) energy.

Block B

Elements in Block B will be solid at room temperature.
Elements in Block B will be metals.
Other predictions about Block B:
The elements have luster.
They are ductile and malleable.
They conduct electricity and thermal (heat) energy.

Block C

Elements in Block C will be gas at room temperature.
Elements in Block C will be non-metals.
Other predictions about Block C:
The elements are dull.
They are poor conductors of electricity and thermal (heat) energy.

Block D

Elements in Block D will be gas at room temperature.
Elements in Block D will be non-metals.
Other predictions about Block D:
The elements are dull.
They are poor conductors of electricity and thermal (heat) energy.
