Verbs like gustar
Some verbs (like gustar) don't follow the regular conjugation patterns. This is because they cannot be translated word for word!
ex: gustar means "to be pleasing to" but we just translate it as "like"

3
Verbs like Gustar
¡ A mí me encantan estos verbos porque son tan fáciles!
4
verbs like gustar (to be pleasing to)
encantar (to be enchanting to)
faltar (to be missing something)
importar (to be important to)
interesar (to be interesting to)
parecer (to seem to)
5
So what's different?
Because these verbs translate differently, they also conjugate differently
If I like one thing, then we say "Me gusta" because we are actually saying "It is pleasing to me" and not I LIKE.
ex: Me gusta la comida. = I like the food.
6
Me gusta el globo.
To translate we'd say I like the balloon
But to conjugate gustar, we have to remember we are actually saying "The balloon (it) is pleasing to me."
7
Me gustan los globos.
to translate we'd say, "I like the balloons"
But to conjugate we have to remember that we are actually saying the balloons (they) are pleasing to me.
notice how gustan = they are pleasing
8
Unlike other verbs, gustar uses indirect object pronouns to tell who "likes" something
Me = I
Te = you
le = he, she, it, Ud. (formal you)
Nos = we
Les = y'all and they
** le and les could mean different people, so you must include a specific name or pronoun to clarify WHO likes something.
9
Le and Les mean more than one thing, so always give specifics when using them.
To do this, write "A" and then the person's name or the pronoun.
A Paco, le gusta la sopa.
A ellos, les gusta la pizza.
A Ud., le gustan las galletas.
10
Even when we change who is liking something, The verb is still going to conjugate like this:
gusta for liking a singular thing
gustan for liking plural things
