Ecosystems path to success

The terrestrial (biomes)
ecosystems have three
general steps to success.

These steps have events that

events before the next can

Ecological Succession: Changes in an ecosystem that causes older

Biomes

When we talk about succession this is the picture you usually see.

Cats, in Minamata Japan, were the
first found to have high levels of
organic mercury in their bodies
which ultimately led to their death.

Soon the human population started
experiencing similar symptoms
from eating contaminated meat
from the dolphin population that
the fishing company had killed and
marked as healthy whale meat.

The chemical company Chisso had been dumping
methylmercury into the ocean and it started to
biomagnify in the marine organisms living in the
waters off Minamata.

Biomagnification

Lesson Summary

Ecological Succession involves a series of
changes in an ecosystem from either starting
a new community or replacing an older
community.

An ecosystem is always trying to develop to
its most complex and stable state.

Disturbances from succession events cause a
decrease in biodiversity, biomass, and
complexity within food webs.

As ecosystems progress through succession
stages biodiversity increases.

Biodiversity is the variety of life in the world
or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.

Biomass is the total mass of organisms in a
given area or volume.
