Why is POV Important?

When an author writes a story, they make a

deliberate choice in which point of view (perspective)

to use to tell that story. The point of view is

important because it significantly influences the plot.

The POV determines how much (or what) information will be

revealed to the reader.

"This Anselmo had been a good guide and he could travel wonderfully
in the mountains. Robert Jordan could walk well enough himself, and

he knew from following him since before daylight that the old man

could walk him to death. Robert Jordan trusted the man, Anselmo, so

far, in everything except judgment.”

The reader is only given information about Anselmo's actions, but Robert
Jordan's thoughts are shared in this passage. The narrator only focuses on
the thoughts and feelings of one character.

The passage uses “He” and “Him” which makes it a third person
narration.

THIRD PERSON LIMITED

EXAMPLE

21

media

Dave looked out to the shoulder, a look of concern on his

face. John was afraid of the shallow reef in the impact zone,
and tended to avoid the peak in these situations. However,
at this particular spot, even though the waves were smaller
out in the shoulder, the reef out there was much shallower,
and Dave worried about John wiping out after a take off.

The narrator is “all knowing” and is able to know the thoughts/feelings
of more than one character, which means it is third person omniscient!

The passage also uses “His” as well as character names making it third person.

THIRD PERSON OMNISCIENT

EXAMPLE

22

media

The American and the girl with him sat at a table in the shade, outside the
building. It was very hot and the express from Barcelona would come in forty
minutes. It stopped at this junction for two minutes and went to Madrid.

‘What should we drink?’ the girl asked. She had
taken off her hat and put it on the table.
‘It’s pretty hot,’ the man said.
‘Let’s drink iced water.’
’Dos agua,’ the man said into the curtain.

The narrator does not provide any information about the
characters’ thoughts or feelings. He remains completely objective
providing only the facts/details of what is happening.
