For example
Setting #1 - The Grocery Store
Setting #2 - Science Class
We use the word "Organic" in different Settings.
Does "Organic" mean the same thing in each setting?
3
Read the sentences on the next few slides and you decide:
Is this sentence using the word "Organic" in the
Science Class or Grocery Store setting?
4
Multiple Choice
Carbohydrates are organic. They contain Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen atoms.

How did you decide when ORGANIC was used in a Science Setting?
10
Organic in science class is often referring to large, complex molecules important for life processes. They contain Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen Atoms.
Science Class ORGANIC
Organic in grocery stores is typically describes a product that was grown naturally with out the use of growth hormones, pesticides, or other non-natural substances.
Grocery Store ORGANIC
11
Now that you have an idea what ORGANIC means, let's explore the word INORGANIC.
What's different and similar about the words Organic and Inorganic?
ORGANIC vs INORGANIC
12
Organic
inexpensive
insane
incomplete
Inorganic
The prefix "in"
expensive
sane
complete
What does "in" do to all these words compared to their root?

Banana
Bread
Eggs
Extracted DNA
Steak
Glucose
Water
Salt
Quarter
Sand
Rock
Metal
Let's experiment - see if you can figure out how to sort the below item as either "ORGANIC" or "INORGANIC".
14
Kind of like Biotic vs Abiotic
Organic substances are kind of like Biotic Factors - they are important to, made by, essential for, and are/were once part of living things.
Inorganic substances are more like Abiotic Factors - they are non-living and occur with out living things.
15
Foods like fruit, breads, meats, and more!
Things made by nature - like seashells, manure, plants and more!
Organic Examples:
Metals
Water
Gases like Oxygen & Carbon Dioxide.
Things that can exist without living things!
Inorganic Examples:

Take 2 - see if you can figure out how to sort the below item as either "ORGANIC" or "INORGANIC".
17
We often use the terms Organic and Inorganic to classify molecules in science class.
Try sorting the molecules on the next slide.

Poll
How well do you feel you know organic and inorganic molecules?
Not at all.
I kind of get it, but I'm still confused.
I mostly understand, but I'd like to keep practicing.
