7th- Ecology: Organisms and Succession Active Vocabulary

​Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today we are working on our active vocabulary.
1. Decide who is going to pick up the coloring utensils
2. When I say "Go" that person will grab the utensils.

​Format:
1. Word
a. definition of word
b. Use the word in a sentence
c. Draw a picture in COLOR that helps you understand the meaning of the word

​1. Biotic factor- all the living orgnisms in an environment
2. Abiotic factor- the non- living factors in an environment
3. Habitat- an area where an organism lives
4. Symbiosis- a relationship in which two organisms live close together
5. Mutualism- both species benefit from the relationship

6. Commensalism- one organism benefits and the other is neither helped nor hurt
7. Parasitism- one organism lives in or on another organism and harms it,
8. Predators- organisms that seek out and eat other organisms
9. Prey- organisms that are eaten
10. Community- made up of the same species that live in the same area
11. Limiting Factor- anything that limits an organisms ability to live in a particular environment
12. Tolerance- the ability of living things to survive the changes in the environment
13. Succession- the process of gradual and natural change
14. Primary succession- takes place on land where no other organisms live. Usually after a volcano errupts. first species to populate an area.
15. Secondary succession- takes place after an existing community is destroyed. Much faster than primary succession to rebuild community.
16. Climax community- stable community after primary or secondary succession occurs.
