Hills

Hills are land formations that are similar to mountains. Unlike mountains, however, hills are not peaked on top. Instead, hills have soft, rounded tops. They are made of grass, dirt, and rocks.

Any piece of land that receives less than ten inches of precipitation

(rainfall) per year.

1/5 of the Earth’s land area is made up of deserts

There are four types of deserts.

HOT & DRY DESERTS

Hot all year round

Rainfall is very sparse; water evaporates quickly.

Atacama –driest receives an average of 1.5cm of
rainfall every year.

Plants are mostly low shrubs and short woody trees.

Animals are very small

Insects, reptiles and birds are common.

Examples: Sahara ( Africa), Great Basin and
Sonoran( North America)

COLD DESERTS

Long dry Summers and a small
amount of rainfall in the Winter

Annual rainfall as low as 2-4 cm
Plants include cacti

Animals : Insects and jack rabbits
during the day; kangaroo rats,
skunks, rabbits
Insects, birds, reptiles (lizards and
snakes)

COASTAL DESERTS

Cool winters and warm summers

Receives about 3-5 inches (8-13

cm) of rainfall each year

Soil high in salt and other nutrients

Plants include salt bush and black

sage

Mammals include coyotes and

badgers

Birds: great horned owl and golden

eagle

Lizards and snakes
