THE BENEFITS OF A HEALTHFUL PLATE

A healthful plate will leave you feeling satisfied, give you more energy,

give you the nutrients you need, and decrease the risk of developing
certain diseases. Here are some components of a healthful plate.

Fruits: Berries contain certain chemicals that may help prevent certain
forms of cancer.

Vegetables: Red, orange, and dark-green, leafy vegetables may cut the
risk of developing a stroke, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other
chronic problems.

53

media

THE BENEFITS OF CREATING A HEALTHFUL PLATE (CONT.)

Grains: High-fiber grains can help with weight management, and breads fortified with folate
can help prevent certain fetal defects.

Protein: Lean protein gives you energy, helps your immune system, and builds muscle.

Dairy: Milk has calcium, which can help to prevent osteoporosis.

Fats: Healthful fats, such as unsaturated fats, help you stay full longer and may help lower
cholesterol.

Sweets: Chocolate contains antioxidants, which protect the body from free radicals; those
latter substances cause damage that leads to heart disease. It’s important to consume only
moderate amounts of sweets because they tend to contain high amounts of sugar and fat. It’s
best to replace candy and baked goods with fruit or yogurt.
