Pronouns are words used to replace
nouns.

Pronouns can be 1st, 2nd, or 3rd
person. They are gender specific, and
they can be either singular or plural.

Pronoun Functions

Just like nouns, pronouns can be used in many different ways:
Subject (who or what the sentence is about)

Subject Complement (comes after a linking verb)

Direct Object (answers “Whom?” or “What?” following an action verb)

Indirect Object (answers “To whom?” or “For whom?” after an action verb)

Object of a Preposition (follow a preposition)

Do not let extra words confuse you! Eliminate extra words if necessary so that
they don’t distract you.

Example:Incorrect: Barb and me went to the grocery store for carrots.

Make sure to look for linking verbs (am, is, are, was,
were, be, being, been)! Subject pronouns ALWAYS follow
linking verbs!

Example: Incorrect: It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem; it’s me.

Correct: It’s I. Hi. I’m the problem; it’s I.

Yes, it sounds funny, but it’s correct! It also means that
Taylor Swift’s hit song, “Anti-Hero,” is grammatically
incorrect!
