Increased Immigration

Between the years 1840 and 1860, immigration in the United States increased immensely. The majority of the immigrants came from Ireland.

A plant disease destroyed most of the food in ireland, so there was an extreme shortage of food. 1.5 million immigrants from Ireland came to the United States. People also came from places like Germany in hopes of getting jobs and living better lives.

Urban Population Grow

Some major cities developed between 1820 and 1840 from villages located along the rivers nearby. St. Louis sits on the banks of the Mississippi river just south of where that river meets the Illinois and Missouri river.

By the mid-1800s, steamboats from north and south lined up along the docks of St. louis, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Louisville also profited from their locations on waterways.

Nativists created the Know-Nothing party in 1849. 
The Know-Nothing party was known for wanting stricter citizenship laws. 
They thought only Americans should be eligible for State and Federal offices.
