Invertebrates and Vertebrates
2
3
The 6 Kingdoms
Organisms in biology can be classified into 6 Kingdoms.
These 6 Kingdoms are:
Animals
Plants
Protists
Monerans - Archaebacteria and Eubacteria
Fungi
4
Animals are multicellular, these cells have a cell membrane that keep everything within it together.
The activity of the cell is controlled by the nucleus.
Animals cells
5
Invertebrates don't have the distinctive feature their counterpart have.
Invertebrates DO NOT have a backbone.
Examples of invertebrates are Porifera, Cnidaria, and Mollusca.
Vertebrates have a distinctive feature compared to their counterpart.
Vertebrates have a backbone. Examples of vertebrates are mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and Amphibians.
Animals can be divided into Invertebrates and Vertebrates.
The Animal Kingdom
6
Exoskeleton is the hard part found on the outside of the body. For example; insect wings.
Exoskeleton
Endoskeleton is the hard part founds inside the body. For example; bones or cartlidge.
Endoskeleton
Endo and Exoskeleton
7
Symmetry of invertebrates
Invertebrates can be identified looking at their features and if they are either Asymmetrical, Bilateral symmetry, or radial symmetry.
Lets look at the next video that explains these.
8
9
Invertebrates
The main Phyla of invertebrates
There are many types of invertebrates, to the side is the main Phyla groups of invertebrates.
10
Vertebrates
Vertebrates can be put into 5 classes. The following slides will explore these a little more and highlight some features you could use to classify them with.
11
Have hair or fur.
Feed their young milk from mammary glands.
Constant body temperature.
Breathe air through lungs.
Mammals
12
3 Sub-classes of Mammals
Placentals give birth to live young, these mammals give birth to more developed babies.
Placental
There are only a small amount of Monotrmes, these mammals give birth to young by laying eggs and they hatch from the eggs.
Monotremes
Marsupials
Marsupials give birth to live young but they need to live a significant time living in their mother's pouch to develop
13
Have feathers, a beak, clawed feet, and wings.
Constant body temperature.
Lay hard eggs.
Breathe air through lungs.
Birds
14
Have gills and scales.
Body temperature changes with their surroundings.
Some have a skeleton of cartilage but
most have bones.
Fish
15
Most lay eggs with waterproof shell.
Body temperature changes with their surroundings.
Have dry, scaly skin.
Breathe air through lungs.
Reptiles
16
Start life in water, live on land as adults.
Have moist skin.
Adults do have lungs, but mainly get air through their skin.
Body temperature changes with their surroundings.
Amphibians
