Present continuous or (Present progressive)

The present continuous (or present progressive) is a tense in English used to express actions that are happening right now. For example, I’m reading a book.

The present continuous is a compound verb tense since it comprises two parts: an auxiliary (verb to be in the present) and the -ing form of the main verb.

- To anticipate facts, quotes, events, or actions that will occur in the future. (They are going to the lake next Sunday).

- Mention temporary events. (Today is raining, but yesterday was sunny)

- Describe actions that occur at the exact moment we speak or write. (Ana is studying English).

- To talk about general, personal, or social situations that occur currently. On occasion, it can be accompanied by adverbs such as currently, lately, or these days, among others. (You are working a lot lately).

3. If the verb ends in e, this letter is removed and the ending -ing is placed. (John is dancing Jazz)

4. Verbs that end in double e retain this ending and add -ing to the end. (Maria is seeing the dog)

5. Verbs ending in –ie put a y + -ing in their place. (He is lying to his parents)

In this verb tense, the ending in ING is extremely important; it is for them that we will see the following rules:

1. All verbs must end in -ing. (The boy is jumping in the yard)

2. When a verb ends in a consonant, the last letter must be doubled to add the ending -ing. (The cat is running).
