I like to do .....

Yesterday, you learned how to express what you like using 〇〇がすきです (... ga suki desu). Today, we will learn how to express an activity you like to do. The grammar might look similar, but it's different.

Grammar pattern:

〇〇 の が すき です
(Verb casual form) no ga suki desu.
Meaning → I like to do .....

Remember the rule about verb placement in Japanese sentences? Verbs usually go at the end.
But when expressing an activity you like, the verb needs to be in the middle of the sentence.
To do this, we turn the verb into a noun by adding the particle の after the verb's dictionary form. This allows the verb to act as the subject or object of the sentence.

なに を する の が すき です か?
nani wo suru no ga suki desu ka?

〇〇 の が すき です
......
no ga suki desu

Note: なにする のすき です
Nani wo suru no ga suki desu ka?
What do you like to do?

3

Particle を ( wo / o ) → read: "o"

Function of Particle を

(pronounced "o") is used to mark the direct object of a sentence. The direct object is the thing that the action is being done to.

Pronunciation

Although written as を (wo), it is pronounced as "o" in modern Japanese.

Example:

えいが みます
Eiga wo mimasu

Explanation :

えいが (eiga) is the direct object.

を (wo) marks えいが (eiga) as the direct object.

みます (mimasu) is the verb.

Translation: "I watch a movie."

Noun Verb

Example:

ほん よみます
Hon wo yomimasu

Explanation :

ほん (hon) is the direct object.

を (wo) marks ほん (hon) as the direct object.

よみます (yomimasu) is the verb.

Translation: "I read a book."

4

Particle と ( to )

Function of Particle と

(to) is a particle that indicates you are doing something with someone. Similar to "with" in English.

Example:

ともだち あそびます
Tomodachi to asobimasu

Explanation :

ともだち (tomodachi) is the direct object.

と (to) is marked ともだち (tomodachi) as the person you are doing something with

あそびます (asobimasu) is the verb that describes the activity you and your friend will do/doing.

Translation: "I hang out/have fun with friends."
