Particle に and で
🧭 What does "に ni" mean?
📍 に (ni) indicates the destination or direction you are going to.
It marks the place you intend to go.
🗣️ Example Sentence:
レストランに いきませんか?
(Resutoran ni ikimasen ka?)
➡️ Shall we go to the restaurant?
🔍 Breakdown:
🍽️ レストラン (resutoran) — restaurant
📍 に — marks "restaurant" as the destination
🚶♀️ いきませんか (ikimasen ka) —
Shall we go? / Would you like to go?
🧭 What does "で" mean?
📍 で (de) indicates the place where an action takes place. It answers the question: Where does the action happen?
⚠️ Important Note:
In the pattern いきませんか? (Shall we go?), we don’t use "で" because we’re talking about the destination, not the place where the action happens.
🗣️ Example Sentence:
レストランで たべませんか?
(Resutoran de tabemasen ka?)
➡️ Shall we eat at the restaurant?
💡 Grammar Tip:
Use で when talking about where an action takes place.
👉 Example: Eating at a restaurant, playing at a park.
Use に when talking about where you're going.
👉 Example: Going to a restaurant, heading to school.
4
Would you like to ...... ? (invitation)
GRAMMAR PATTERN:
〇〇に いきませんか?ー ..... ni ikimasen ka?
Would you like to go to 〇〇?
🧠 Explanation:
📍 〇〇に ....ni — Direction or destination marker "to ...."
➡️ Replace 〇〇 with the place you will/want to go.
Examples:
🎬 えいがかん eigakan — movie theater
🍽️ レストラン resutoran — restaurant
📍 に ni — Particle indicating direction or destination
It shows where you're going.
🚶♀️ いきませんか? ikimasen ka? — A polite way to invite someone:
👉 Won’t you go?
👉 Would you like to go?
👉 Shall we go?
🗣️ Example Sentence: レストランに いきませんか? Resutoran ni ikimasen ka? ➡️ Would you like to go to the restaurant?
🧠 In Japanese, the ending "〜ません" is the negative form of a verb, meaning "not." But when combined with the question particle "か" (ka), it becomes a polite way to make a suggestion or invitation.
🍽️ Example: The Verb たべます (tabemasu)
✅ たべます (tabemasu) — To eat
❌ たべません (tabemasen) — Do not eat
❓ たべませんか? (tabemasen ka?) ⬇️
👉 Shall we eat? 👉 Won’t you eat? 👉 Would you like to eat?
