Standard

SEV1. Obtain, evaluate, and
communicate information to
investigate the flow of energy and
cycling of matter within an ecosystem.

a. Develop and use a model to
compare and analyze the levels of
biological organization including
organisms, populations, communities,
ecosystems, and biosphere.

Why do we need to understand
what an

ecosystem is?

This symbol means its a HOT question. HOT stands for Higher Order Thinking. It’s a question to keep in mind throughout the
lesson. Don’t worry if you can’t answer it at the beginning of the lesson - you should be able to answer it by the end though

Organizing Our Environment

We organize our environment from smallest (one single

living thing) to largest (the whole world).

16

17

media
media

ORGANISM

An organism is one single
living thing.

You are an organism.

A group of the same
organisms is called a
population.

18

media
media

POPULATION

A population is a group of the
same organism.

Populations are made up of
biotic (living) things.

Populations that interact with
one another are called
communities.

19

media
media

COMMUNITY

A community is made up of all
the different species that
interact in a habitat.

Communities are made up of
biotic factors only.

Organisms and populations come
together to make a community.

20

media
media

Ecosystem

A ecosytem is made up of all
the different species and
nonliving things interact in a
habitat.

Ecosystems are made up of biotic
and abiotic factors.

Abiotic factors are air, land,
and water.

Bacteria in the cave use a process
called chemosynthesis to convert
sulfur compounds and ammonia into
chemical energy. This energy drives
the bacteria's primary production,
which creates floating mats of living
matter.

Lesson review

The environment is broken down
into levels of organization.

Each level builds upon the
previous level.

The first three levels are made up
of only biotic factors.

The last three levels are made up
of both biotic and abiotic
factors.

A habitat is the place an
organisms lives.

A niche is the job the organisms
does within the ecosystem.

Organisms are interdependent upon
each other, and the ecosystem will
fail if all the niches are not
maintained.
