Present Simple vs Present Continuous

What's the difference?​

Present Simple generally refers to:

• Facts that are always true e.g: Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius

• Habits, everyday things, habitual actions in general present e.g: British people drink a lot of tea.

• States e.g: I don't like gangster films.

Present Continuous generally refers to:

• Actions which are in progress at the moment. They can be temporary. e.g: I am staying in a hotel this weekend

• They can be actually in progress. e.g: The dog is sleeping on our bed!

• They can be generally in progress BUT NOT actually happening at the moment. e.g: I am learning to drive.

Present Simple - AFFIRMATIVE

• I go to bed at 11 pm everyday.

• Anna works in an office.

• We celebrate Christmas with a big dinner with the whole family.

• He does his homework at night

• Anna and Lucy like to go to the cinema every month.
